“I urge anybody who saw a dark coloured estate vehicle acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the offence, or anyone with information that could assist with our investigation, to contact us at the earliest opportunity.

“There will be increased patrols in the area today for reassurance purposes."

The bank says the cash machine will be out of action for a while but the branch will be open to customers today (Thursday).

A spokesperson for Santander said: "We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by the closure of our Holywell branch today.

The Santander spokesperson added that the bank is working with police to support their investigation into the break-in.

They added: "The ATM at the branch will be unavailable in the near term, due to damage sustained. We are working to fix this as soon as possible and Santander customers can continue to withdraw cash at all LINK ATMs free of charge.

"Customers can continue to service their account online, via mobile and over the phone.

"We would advise any Holywell branch customers who need to speak to us urgently to call our customer service line on 0330 9 123 123, open until 9pm."
