This award recognised an individual within the school setting for their outstanding contribution in supporting pupils, students, teachers and the life of the school.

The winner of the Support Worker of the year award was Maxine Roberts, a support worker at Argoed High School. 

Maxine understands all the children she supports and allows their personality to shine.

As well as that Maxine is dedicated, caring and compassionate getting the best out of every child.

Maxine's caring nature extends into her personal life where she is a foster carer, a role she attributes to understanding pupils varied and diverse needs.

Maxine took to the stage to accept her award in a bright red pair of her signature Doc Martin shoes.

Speaking of her role as a support worker Maxine said: "I get so much satisfaction from the role.

"There are children in school that we may not know exactly what is going on at home and we don't know how their home life looks so I try and consider that in my work."

Maxine always tries to treat the pupils with respect and "like human beings and how I would treat my own children."

Paul Smith, headteacher, Argoed High School said: “We are so proud of Maxine winning the Support Staff of the Year Award.  Our support staff play a crucial role in ensuring pupils with, and without, ALN receive the support they require to succeed, and this recognition highlights Maxine's dedication and commitment as a member of our support staff team.

“This award truly embodies our school moto ‘Learning Together, Working Together, Succeeding Together’ and to be recognised at these awards is a fantastic achievement not only for Maxine personally, but it makes us incredibly proud as a whole school community.”

Other nominees for the category included Bethan Matthias, a support worker that goes above and beyond to meet the needs of children in her care and, Hannah Nelsona support worker that is passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated to giving students the best experience and capturing every student’s imagination.

The award was presented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Maria Hinfelaar from Wrexham Glyndwr University.
