WALES' favourite baby bump nicknames have been revealed.

With 60% of parents and parents-to-be opting to give their baby bumps nicknames, recent poll reveals that the most popular nicknames being: 'Peanut', 'Bean' and 'Berry'.

In Wales, parents have taken a similar approach to singer Adele, by also referring to their bump as ‘Peanut’.

With an overwhelming 9 in 10 UK parents experiencing notable psychological benefits when nicknaming their baby bump, 71% of parents also admit that they choose to keep the bumps nickname throughout the child’s life after birth.

Overall, the nation’s favourite bump nickname is ‘Peanut’, used by one in ten expectant couples.


'Buddy', Beansprout', 'Bubba' and 'Bumpy' also feature in the top 25 along with 'Toad', 'Shrimp', 'Mouse' and 'Mango'.

For seven in ten parents – 71 per cent – the bump's nickname sticks and they continue to use it well after the birth.

When it came to her newborn son's name in 2013, pop superstar Adele chose to keep it under wraps and instead referred to him by his nickname 'Little Peanut'.

The survey of 1,000 parents-to-be or parents of children aged under five was carried out for Pregnacare by Vitabiotics, supplements for expecting and new mothers.

Of those that named their bump, 50 per cent said it was to add some excitement; 47 per cent to make their baby feel more real; and 22 per cent to avoid saying their actual planned name out loud.

Nearly half – 46 per cent – then created personalised items displaying their baby bump's name.

And an overwhelming nine in ten – 89 per cent – said that the nickname helped them bond with their baby before the birth.

Of those that did not name their bump, 44 per cent said they simply did not feel the need while 18 per cent were afraid of becoming too attached and wanted to wait for the baby to arrive safely.

Susanne Bisinotto, of Vitabiotics, said: “The journey of becoming a parent starts as soon as you hear the exciting news.

“Even though this can be a rollercoaster of a time, many parents have experienced the psychological benefits of starting this special bond with their baby through giving their baby bump a nickname.”
