THE 'SITUATION has improved' at a Wrexham car park which has been come infamous in recent times, according to an MS.

The Island Green car park has become infamous in recent times for people receiving fines, when in many cases, they feel they have been wrongly given one.

The issue has grown to the point where businesses say they are missing out on customers as people are too afraid to park there.

Wilko and Asda Living both closed their stores there last year, and local MS' Lesley Griffiths and Ken Skates have been trying to address the parking issue with Euro Car Parks, who are in charge of parking.

Problems persisted there, with drivers saying they were being wrongly fined due to the ticketing machine not working properly.

In December, the Leader confirmed that new ticket machines had been installed at the car park.

Now, Wrexham's Member of the Senedd (MS) Lesley Griffiths says the 'situation' at the car park is improving thanks to these new machines.

She says that she has received fewer complaints about fines since they were introduced.

However, she added: "In all my time as the MS for Wrexham, I do not think I have encountered a company that has been so difficult to communicate with.

“I last wrote to Euro Car Parks in December and I chased them up in January. I have not even received an acknowledgement and they still refuse to meet with Ken Skates MS and I, despite our numerous offers.

“During this past year or so, I have highlighted on many occasions to Euro Car Parks that there must be an issue with the ticketing machines at Island Green Shopping Centre as so many constituents and non-constituents have been adversely affected.

"ECP always insisted their ticket machines worked properly and didn’t inform me they were installing new machines before Christmas. I am, however, glad the company finally acted and it seems the situation has improved as fewer shoppers have contacted me in recent weeks.

“I hope we have turned a corner and the parking problems have finally been resolved, but if any constituents have received unfair fines, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

Clwyd South MS Ken Skates, who has also raised several concerns about the car park previously, said: "Despite the wall of silence from Euro Car Parks, I'm pleased that the company eventually acted on our concerns about faulty ticket machines.

"My office hasn't had any new complaints about the machines at Island Green since Christmas, and it's hard to believe that's a coincidence.

"Sadly, this action has come too late for the many local people and visitors to Wrexham who have been stung by Euro Car Parks, and that leaves a bitter taste."

He added: "Lesley and I will continue to take cases up for our constituents should the issues we have highlighted for so long persist."
