A 65-year-old woman was found dead after a crash that closed the main road through Shropshire for nearly three hours over the weekend. 

West Mercia Police officers were called out to a 'concern for safety' report at the junction of the A5 Gobowen and Gledrid Island in Weston Rhyn, Oswestry, at around 8.45am on Sunday.

A spokesperson from the force said: “We were called to the five crosses roundabout in Gobowen, Shropshire around 8.45am following a concern for safety.

"Sadly, a 65-year-old woman was found deceased.

"Next of kin have been informed."

A paramedic officer was also in attendance at the scene, but confirmed in a statement that they had not been required as there were no patients.

“We were called at 9.53am on Sunday to reports of an incident at the junction of the A5 Gobowen and Gledrid Island in Weston Rhyn, Oswestry," a spokesman said. 

"A paramedic officer attended the scene. Upon arrival, no patients were found at the scene and we were stood down as our assistance was no longer required.”

The A5 at Gobowen was closed in both directions for several hours.

Earlier on Sunday morning, West Mercia Police had said in a statement: “We are currently dealing with an incident on the A5, in Gobowen, Shropshire.

“The A5 between the Five Crosses roundabout and North Gledrid roundabout is closed northbound and southbound.

“Drivers are asked to find alternative routes.

“Thank you for your patience.”

National Highways were also at the scene to assist with traffic management.

The traffic was diverted through  the B5069 and B5070.

The road re-opened a couple of hours later, at approximately 11.30am.
