AN 'AMAZING' community in Flintshire came together to save the local Scout hut from flooding.

Penyffordd Scout hut was under threat from rising water levels amid Storm Babet last Friday.

After one of Scout's Explorers had seen water levels on the car park rising as she travelled past on the bus, Penyffordd Scouts issued a plea for help on Facebook for sandbags.

Scout leader, Graham Cooper, said the response from the community was "brilliant".

The Leader:

"A few leaders were available to co-ordinate the response but we had help from local businesses donating the sandbags," he said.

"And parents of kids at the group, kids from the group once schools shut, the local councillor and residents in the village came along too and helped dig a trench to drain the water and even people passing by stopping and offering to fetch teas/coffees for the helpers.

"A massive thank you to everyone who helped, brilliant community spirit and was nice to see the support the village has for the group. A special shout-out to Read Construction for the sandbags."

The Leader:

Graham said the site is notorious for flooding due to ongoing drainage issues.

MORE NEWS:

He added: "We don’t need rain like Friday for our car park to flood - it happens regularly but it’s never come so close to flooding the building."

The Leader:

Steve Love, lead volunteer for Penyffordd Scouts, said: "A huge thank you to everyone in the community who came to offer a hand with the Scout Hut. Your efforts are massively appreciated by all of us.

"Whether it be the donation of sandbags, helping to blockade the doors, lifting everything off the floor in the event of the water coming in, digging a trench to drain water or offering to get the volunteers some hot drinks - thank you so much.

"The great news is, our hut didn’t flood, but it almost certainly would have without the amazing efforts of the village."
