POLICE in Wrexham are gearing up to tackle any illegal activity at Wrexham AFC matches in the coming season, an Inspector has said.

Inspector Rob Stevenson told the Leader that meetings have been taking place to prepare for the forthcoming football season - including measures to combat violence, disorder and drug use.

He explained: "We have lots of plans in place for the football season.

"These are really exciting times and we want to continue with Wrexham being portrayed in a positive light.

"We will be visiting what we class as 'risk fans' - these are people who have previous offences at football matches or whom we have intelligence about - to remind them that Wrexham is a family orientated day out at the football."

The Inspector said officers will be taking "robust action" against anyone who comes to matches intending to cause disruption or violence.

And drugs are also an area being targeted by police.

Insp Stevenson added: "Recently, we have had the support of passive drug dogs at the football.

"We have been proactively swiping areas to ensure the stadium is not being used for drugs use.

"And we had a number of people stop-searched over the last season for drugs offences.

"This will continue in the next season to make this a safe and enjoyable place for families and fans alike."
