THE MAYOR of Mold has called for a widening of 'compassion and empathy' ahead of Refugee Week which will see the town play host to a concert celebrating diversity.

'United by Music' will be a celebration of culture and diversity, coinciding with Refugee Week which takes place from June 19 - 25.

Organised by Mayor of Mold, Cllr Teresa Carberry alongside Asylum Link Merseyside, the event will amplify the mayor's theme of diversity.

The fundraising concert will take place on Friday, June 23 at Bethesda Chapel from 6pm until 9pm and will see all proceeds go towards the mayor's charity.

'United by Music' will feature music performances and speakers from Wales, Iran, Pakistan, West Africa and more.

Cllr Carberry said: "As the Mayor of Mold. I have chosen the theme of ‘Youth, Culture and Diversity’ for my year.

"Refugee Week falls between the 16th – 25th June and is the world's largest arts and culture festival, celebrating the contributions, resilience and creativity of refugees and people seeking sanctuary – this event is the perfect vehicle to join with the community, promoting both my theme and Refugee Week.

"Refugee Week is an umbrella festival, where everyone is invited to take part no matter how much time they have, or where they are in the world - this includes our town.

"Many schools in Flintshire, will be completing activities to celebrate and learn about the richness, diversity and culture brought by those who wish to come and rebuild their lives in Wales – a welcoming Nation of Sanctuary."

She added: "The last few years have been challenging for all of us. We are still adjusting to new realities post-lockdown as well as responding to new crises. Within our own experiences over the last few years, we have in this community, found the tools we need to be compassionate, not just to ourselves and those in our immediate circle, but to all our human neighbours and our one shared home, planet Earth.

"We have come to understand how interconnected our world is, and how something seemingly “far away” can affect us all.

"The events of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the ever-increasing disasters caused by climate change, are evidence of our need to widen our circles of compassion and empathy.

"The evening will a sharing of musical talents, song, and food. I do hope people will support it and raise funds for the Mayor’s Charities."
