A SALVATION Army church in Wrexham is marking 100 years of serving its community this week.

The Holy Family Catholic Church is inviting members of the public to come along and join in the celebrations.

On Thursday, May 18 there will be a community picnic starting taking place from 1pm at the church grounds (on Park Road) with a special guest singer performing songs from musicals.

Anyone attending is asked to please bring their own food and both hot and cold drinks will be provided by The Salvation Army (and maybe some cake too!)

That event will be followed by another on Saturday, May 20 when the Coedpoeth Salvation Army Band and Wrexham Songsters will join forces for a free live music concert.

Music begins at 7.30pm at Plas Pentwyn Community Centre. If interested in attending, please call Sharon on 01978 757509 to confirm your attendance as places are limited.

The Salvation Army’s Divisional Leaders in Wales, Majors Roger and Noreen Batt kicked off the week of anniversary celebrations on Sunday, May 14, joining Coedpoeth church leaders Darren and Sharon Hampton for their morning worship.

Darren, who has led the church for five years said: “It is our privilege to be here as Coedpoeth church celebrates 100 years of service in the community. We arrived at a place sustained through many years of committed, faithful service and we will go forward in this same spirit.

“The church is made up of a mixture of local people all offering their own individual talents and skills and making it a wonderful place to be. We look forward to this week of celebration and warmly invite people to come along and get involved.”

The church also helps support the local community in many ways, through its community shop, which is located on the High Street in Coedpoeth and also by helping with foodbank and gas and electricity top-up referrals, and by hosting an annual school uniform clothing bank.

During the week of celebrations, local primary school children will pay a visit to the corps to learn about The Salvation Army and how it works in the local community.

Activities will wrap up with a service led by former Coedpoeth corps officer Major Teressa Harris on Sunday, May 21.

Coedpoeth corps was established in Wrexham in May 1923 by Captain Grace Miller, who led the church for two years alongside Lieutenant Zillah Escott and Lieutenant Gwen Moremom.
