A young Turkish food shop owner from Wrexham is supporting a glittering charity concert in Llangollen next week, raising cash for the earthquake which decimated part of his homeland.

For the first time ever the town’s three performing arts groups have teamed up to stage Llangollen on Show for Turkey and Syria, a variety and old time music hall concert from which all proceeds will go to help survivors of the massive quakes which hit the two countries earlier this year.

Organisers who were seeking sponsorship from local businesses for both nights of the show - on Thursday and Friday May 11 and 12 – were delighted when Haci Deniz, who runs the Chip O Dee Turkish kebab and fish bar in Borras Road, Wrexham and a similar eatery in Caergwrle high street, decided to financially back the Thursday performance.

Haci explained that he was happy to help as he has family back in Turkey and has already raised money directly for the earthquake appeal.

Performers from Llangollen Operatic Society – mainly members of its Young ‘Uns junior section – Llangollen Twenty Club drama group and the Collen Players which specialises in presenting regular old time music hall shows are involved in the big show.

The Operatic’s contribution will be some rousing chorus numbers from shows like Oliver and Half a Sixpence, Twenty Club will present a series of comedy inspired by their hilarious past hits while Collen Players will take audiences back to the colourful days of music hall.

All proceeds will go to support the Disaster Emergency Committee in which 15 of the UK’s top charities have come together to supply a lifeline to thousands of survivors of the earthquake.

There will be a bar and prize raffle on both nights and a number of other local businesses have pledged their financial support through sponsorship.

Tickets, priced at £12 (no concessions) are available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/llangollenoperaticsociety or from Courtyard Books, Llangollen, and the Llangollen Oggie Shop in Caste Street or on the door on the night. Demand is expected to be such that organisers advise on booking promptly.
