A GROUP of Canadian Wrexham fans - formed out of a love for the beautiful game, their country and Ryan Ryenolds - are set to return to north Wales this weekend.

The Leader previously reported on the 'Wrexham Canada' club in December 2022, when they visited the Racecourse to witness the Reds' 4-1 FA Cup win over Farnborough.

The club has grown in popularity all around the world - particularly since the release of the hugely-successful Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

And that is certainly the case back in Wrexham AFC co-owner Ryan Reynolds' home country of Canada.

Wrexham Canada's founder - Sandy Domingos-Shipley - says the fan club grew rapidly after being formed last year.

Speaking to the Leader, Sandy said: "How this all came about was when I was back home in Toronto I was chatting with my friend Joe about the show and I asked “what if I organised a group trip to Wrexham? Show support to Ryan but also make it a Canadian meet up”.

"Because Wrexham isn’t as easy to get to as is going to Manchester or London, I thought when I posted the idea on the Canadian Facebook Group that I might get 10 or something.

"But within the week I got 100 people expressing interest and that just blew my mind. Unfortunately, due to the train strike it cut the numbers from 100 to 60 as we have people coming from all over.

"It’s definitely a challenge putting all this together but what drives me personally as the organiser is knowing and seeing that those around me are having an amazing time and all the hours and days I have put aside to organise all this is worth it.

"The intention of the Twitter account was solely for the purpose to be a place where I could connect Canadians from both sides of the pond to meet up at games and make the trips to Wrexham a memorable one. But also to try to bring a bit of Canada to the Welsh/UK people who follow our account!".

Sandy says the initial intention of the club was to support Ryan Reynolds and show that they are all 'extremely proud' of what he is doing - but she says it has since grown into something much bigger than that.

She added: "After our first trip in November, I realised that it also had become about creating our own community, whether it is for Canadians based in the UK or Canadians who fly over for the games and we join them.

"There have been many who have gone to the games individually which we only found out after their visit as they weren’t aware of our Twitter account so weren’t able to connect with them to join them.

"But I have organised two large group gatherings - the first one in November 2022 with 60. I then also organised an early Christmas party in Wrexham, it was the best weekend ever!"

Wrexham Canada is now returning to north Wales for the match v Wealdstone on Saturday, February 11, where a group of 30 of them will meet up at the Racecourse ground.

The Leader:

PIC: Wrexham Canada's Anne King and Normandie Wragg.

It will be the first National League match that many of them will have attended.

Sandy added: "Slowly we have more and more Canadians from back home following our account and we have been approached via DM from people who want advice or help on certain matters as they are planning a trip to Wrexham.

"Because in Canada we don’t get the same number of holidays as in the UK, so I want to help where possible to make their trip as great as possible.

"One of the things we keep mentioning in our group chats or when we talk to people about our trips is how welcoming the people we have met are.

"Having our group logo and names around the logo at the Turf Wall (as shown in the show) is pretty cool for us and whenever we go back we love to look at it as it makes us feel like we are part of something really special."

The Leader:

PIC: Wrexham Canada are a permanent feature at The Turf pub which is right next to the Racecourse ground!

Anne King from Toronto said: "Thank you Ryan for giving me extra family time as well as an opportunity to find all these crazy Canadians hiding in my area. Who knew there were so many of us here? Thought I was the only one”

Fellow Wrexham Canadian and Toronto resident Chad Walsh added: "Our Wrexham Canada family has been created from the love of sport and the love of our home nation (and Ryan of course). We are extremely grateful for both and also grateful to Wrexham AFC and the Welsh community for welcoming us with open arms."

Another follower, Ian McCall, also from Toronto, said: "It’s nice to spend time with fellow Canadians whilst showing our support to Ryan and the team but also the town/country where we feel there is a lot of similarities to Canada in its people.”

Karen Percy, who is from Vancouver, said: "I genuinely look forward to the events Sandy plans, there’s always a good crowd that comes out and somehow we manage to meet even more people, including lots of locals like those from Wrexham. It’s a great opportunity to experience local culture whilst exposing my children to a bit of Canadiana.”
