As the region's pubs and bars continue to recover from the impact of the covid pandemic - the Leader is shining a light on the industry with our Pub of the Week feature.

This is an opportunity for landlords and landladies from across Wrexham and Flintshire to have the chance to showcase their establishment.

Now more than ever, it's vital to support our local businesses.

If you would like your pub considered to be featured, simply fill in our online Q&A or if you would like to chat or nominate a pub, email claire.pierce@newsquest.co.uk

You've probably driven or walked very close by this pub hundreds of times, and been none the wiser.

But once you know it's there, it's almost impossible not to fall in love with it.

Tucked down an almost missable lane on the drop down from Gwernymynydd to Loggerheads Country Park, the Colomendy Arms is quite the find.

Initially the quaint looking, red brick, cottage-style inn looks like a very typical country pub, nestled in the small community of Cadole.

But it's a warren of wonderful spaces - cosy nooks and intimate corners, as well as more sociable areas. They've really made the most of every inch - including what's affectionately known as 'the ski lodge'.

Landlady and landlord, Elsie and John Butler, will celebrate 35 years at the pub in August, taking it on in 1988 with their three children, then aged 12, 10 and nine.

The couple has seen a lot happen in the industry in that time but nothing could have prepared them for the pandemic.

Elsie said: "We didn't think we would come out the other side of it. When we went into lockdown, we thought that was it.

"We thought we were closing for good."

And while it wasn't without it challenges, John, and Elsie, with the help of their three sons, got to work in that time making improvements at the pub. The refurbishment has been impressive, and previously unused areas are now perfect spaces for those looking to get away from all the noise and rush of life.

With its pretty outside lights, and warming log burners and open fire, the couple, who also live at the pub, have worked hard on creating a welcoming place.

While Elsie says they now see more people from the village, a lot of their customers are from all over, especially walkers in the area.

And with a subtle sign on the Ruthin road, even more are discovering this tucked away gem, with many thinking it's new.

The pub doesn't do food itself but they embrace guests that do, hosting pop up food events. These have included street food from Malaysia, Indonesia and Korea, a hog roast just before Christmas, courtesy of Pen-y-lan Pork, in Wrexham, and even venison from Wild Street Kitchen, run by Michelin-starred chefs.

The festive season also saw them host Father Christmas, reindeer and a brass band, with the hog roast a sell out.

They're next foodie event is in celebration of St David's Day, taking place on Saturday, March 4 from 2pm, with a Welsh theme.

Of course what's on offer behind the bar is important, and as well as the usual drinks, John and Elsie will usually have five real ales on offer.

They also do hot drinks, including tea, coffee and hot chocolate for those looking to warm up.

Once they have got their drinks, customers are spoilt for choice of where to enjoy them. Beyond the main rooms, there's 'the shed', an old storage area that has been converted into its own private space.

Then at the top of the pub's car park, is the 'ski lodge'. The wooden structure resembles the kind of thing you would see on the slopes of Switzerland, and while open to the environment around it, a full roof keeps people safe from the elements.

It's an incredibly social space, and even comes with a decorative pair of skis!

Asked what it was that had seen them stay at the pub for more than three decades, Elsie added: "It's about interacting with other people. We enjoy it, otherwise we wouldn't still be here."
