As the region's pubs and bars return to normality - the Leader is again shining a light on the industry with our Pub of the Week feature.

This is an opportunity for landlords and landladies from across Wrexham and Flintshire to have the chance to showcase their establishment.

Now more than ever, it's vital to support our local businesses.

HOPE AND ANCHOR (THE TRAP)

Ewloe Place, Buckley

Location, location, location - it can make or break any venue. Fortunately for this Flintshire pub, it has a great one.

The Hope and Anchor is known locally as The Trap, due to its position by popular fishing site, the Trap Pool.

And it's the perfect outlook from their ample beer garden, always an added bonus for making the most of any warm summer nights, and play area.

Running things at The Trap are husband and wife team, 34-year-old John and Sophie Hughes, 30.

The couple took over the Buckley pub about three years ago, and are loving every minute of it, despite the pandemic setbacks and rising utility bills.

The arrival of covid and lockdown was a big change, and Sophie said: "It was so strange. We went from having people in the pub all day, seeing our regulars daily, to not seeing anyone.

"The place was just so silent. Then reopening and having to enforce changes and rules, it was difficult but our customers have been brilliant

"Things are picking up and looking good. As the weather improves the beer garden is getting used more as well."

The couple, who also have two children aged seven and 10 years, pride themselves on being a part of the community, with Sophie saying it's the best part of the job.

She added: "It's hard work but because you get to see all the customers, it makes it all worthwhile. It's like an extended family."

During lockdown they collected donations for the local foodbank, and they have hosted community events, including a bonfire night and Christmas grinch event, where all that attended received a free selection box.

At the end of last year they helped put together a calendar for 2022, to help raise money towards a defibrillator to be located at the pub to benefit the community. It featured several locals in their birthday suits, inspired by the famous Calendar Girls.

For those looking for a bit of entertainment, the pub also has live music every week – Charlie Reader performs this Friday, at 9pm - comedy acts (Britain's Got Talent star Our Trace is set to return to the pub), a weekly quiz night every Wednesday, plus classic staples a dart board and pool table.

And it's their positivity that makes the place, and one local sang their praises.

Kevin Woolley said: "John and Sophie have transformed the pub into one my favourite watering holes.

"Whether I come in on my own, with friends or with my dog, I'm always made welcome.

"Surrounding scenery is beautiful, and there's a great selection of beers, wines and spirits.

"We've also sampled the pub's breakfast, 10/10 for value. My new local."

It was breakfast that recently saw a visit from the star of YouTube's Beard Meats Food, Adam Moran, who took on an epic breakfast challenge!

As any pub with a few years and a bit of history under its belt should claim, The Trap has spirits other than the ones in glasses!

Sophie said: "It was originally owned by Foxes Ales in 1775 making it the oldest pub in Buckley. It's said there is a ghost called Annie that haunts the pub.

"She was the wife of the owner of Buckley brickworks and was pushed into the lake.

"Also during the war there was a German fighter jet that crashed into the cottages across the road and the pilot landed in Mold.

"I haven't seen any myself but I quickly turn the lights off and sprint upstairs.

"But a few people have said strange things have happened that they can't put their finger on as to why."

Whether it's the community spirit, a spirit over ice or something a bit more spooky, there really is something for everyone at The Trap.
