PEOPLE throughout Wrexham and Flintshire have been paying tribute to HM The Queen Elizabeth II.

Her Majesty died aged 96 years old on Thursday, September 8.

The nation has been in mourning with services taking place across the country, including in Wrexham and Flintshire.

Here's how churches, schools and businesses in the local area have been/will be paying tribute over the coming days.

WREXHAM

Rossett-based Darland High School joined together as pupils, staff and governors paid their respects.

At 11:58am on Friday (September 9), they held a two-minute silence to reflect upon her 70 years of service.

As a further sign of respect, their flag shall be flown at half mast during the official period of mourning.

The half-muffled bells rang out in honour of the Queen at St Giles' church.

A statement from the Wrexham-based parish church read: "With deepest sadness we mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"May she rest in peace and rise in glory. A Book of Condolence will open at St Giles' Parish Church today (September 9)."

The Diocese of Wrexham has also paid tribute.

Bishop Peter Brignall said: "In the 70 year reign as Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland we have known a monarch who in so many ways has been an outstanding example of Christian discipleship reigning over our countries and those of the Commonwealth.

"Her Majesty the Queen has shown by example, commitment and leadership that has been inspired by her faith and has inspired so many of faith and none. It is this Sovereign whose death we mourn.

"On behalf of the Catholic community of the Diocese of Wrexham with its people of many nationalities of the this islands, the Commonwealth and beyond I extend our condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II. Our prayer now is that before the throne of the Merciful God she receive in abundance that which she has given, all for which she has hoped in faith and be united with her beloved Prince Philip in the peace and joy of the heavenly kingdom.

He added: "May Prince Charles as he assumes the office of King in grief at the death of his mother know blessing and wisdom in his reign. God save the King.

"I will celebrate Mass for the repose of the soul of Queen Elizabeth II at 5.00pm today in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Sorrows. Please be assured of my continued prayers."

Meanwhile, a statement from local business Wrexham Lager read: "We are saddened to hear of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

"Wrexham Lager, out of respect to the Royal Family, will only be updating social media when absolutely necessary."

Wrexham Glyndwr University took to social media to share a picture of the Queen during her visit to open the Techniquest centre on site there in 2003.

A statement from them read: "In memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022 You are invited to share messages of condolence and any memories of her visiting North East Wales in our online Book of Condolence: https://orlo.uk/hermajestycondolances_O7Gzs 

"We are privileged that in 2003, The Queen stepped foot on Wrexham Glyndwr University's campus (known then as NEWI), to open Techniquest. Join us in reminiscence, as we remember this special day."

A statement from Coleg Cambria said: "Our thoughts are with the Royal Family today following the immensely sad news that HRH Queen Elizabeth II has passed away aged 96. For every person at the college she has been part of us for our entire lives.

"She has represented hard work, commitment and dedication, accepting she not always got it right but teaching us how we can learn from our actions and make changes. She has spent her lifetime promoting and working for the United Kingdom and we owe so much to her.

"It will be a change for us all and it will impact us all.

"The college will continue to be open but we will be on hand to offer support and advice to anyone who needs it. There will be a Wall of Remembrance at each site (Wrexham, Deeside, Llysfasi and Northop) for those who wish to simply put something in writing.

"We will of course continue to communicate what and how the college will respond and support the developments of the next couple of weeks.

"Please make sure you are able to speak to someone if you feel overwhelmed."

FLINTSHIRE

Some businesses took the decision to close for the day as a mark of respect to the Queen following her death.

One of those was Dandy's Topsoil and Turf, based in Sealand, who wrote: "**Closure details today from 12 noon** It is with deep sorrow and regret that we acknowledge the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

"Our thoughts are with the Royal Family and all those who mourn the loss of our wonderful Queen at this very sad time. As a sign of our deepest respect and admiration, we will be closing our family business Dandy’s Landscape Supplies & Dandy’s Plant Hire on Sealand Rd early at 12 noon today, Friday the 9th of September and we will remain closed until Saturday at 8am."

Flint and Holywell Rotary Club has issued the following tribute: "Everyone at Flint and Holywell Rotary offers their condolences to the Royal Family, following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and to everyone around the world who loved, respected, and admired her.

"We will be forever grateful for her Service Above Self. God save the King!"

Meanwhile, the Red Lion pub in Penyffordd offered a flag tribute (below).

A statement from the pub's team read: "Flying the flags of the United Kingdom at half mast out of respect to HM Queen Elizabeth II. We will also be lighting up the Red Lion Penyffordd this evening.

And the flag was also up at Connah's Quay High School, who wrote: "It comes with great sadness that we hear of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

"Our flag is flying at half mast and this morning learners and staff took part in an extended registration and a minutes silence to pay our respects.

"Any school closures will be communicated as soon as we are informed."

St Deiniol's Church, Hawarden is one of those set to pay tribute over the weekend.

A statement from them read: "There will be a service of Evening Prayer on Sunday at 6pm at St Deiniol's to remember and pray for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her family. Everyone is welcome. Our church will be open, as usual, during the daytime if you wish to come into pray or light a candle."

In Flint, a wreath-laying service was held to pay respects to the Queen.

A Flint Town Council spokesperson said: "The Mayor, Cllr. Michelle Perfect, Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Ben Goldsborough and the Leader, Cllr. Paul Cunningham attended a Wreath Laying Service in memory of Her Majesty the Queen at St. Mary's & St. David’s Parish Church, Flint."

Elsewhere, Union flag has been raised to half mast earlier this morning at St Deiniol’s in Hawarden.

The six bells have been muffled for the period of the official Royal mourning. One of the bells was tolled 70 times as others were across the United Kingdom at 12noon. Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth 2.

On Saturday, the Union flag will be raised back up to full-mast at 1pm and remain there for 24 hours to coincide with the proclamations of the assertion of King Charles 3rd, then returning to half-mast.
