A community council in Wrexham has been left 'devastated' after discovering an incident of vandalism over the weekend.

Cefn Community Council have spoken of the frustration that vandalism causes as they aim to upgrade facilities in the area.

After securing grant funding of around £24,000, the council resurfaced the MUGA on Plas Kynaston Lane.

It was opened just over seven weeks ago and over the weekend, council staff had discovered areas of the playing facility had been burnt.

It is the second time the new facility has been vandalised, with another incident of littering and panels being broken taking place before it had even opened.

Now staff are asking themselves 'why we even bother'.

A spokesperson said: "We’re totally devastated that all the hard work we put in to get the area resurfaced has come to this.

"We have CCTV, which will be checked and the police will be involved.

"This was a small part of what we hope to achieve for the community, and seeing damage like this is a huge let down."

The recent incidents have left the council debating whether to lock the facility and charge those who want to use it in order to prevent similar attacks from happening.

The spokesperson added: "We don't want to lock it as that defeats the point in it.

"So far it's been really well received by the community and people are happy with it, but it's getting to the point where we're always wondering what we're going to come into on a Monday morning.

"We as a Community Council are the lowest tier of local government, largely made up of volunteers with a few paid staff who work hard to secure funding for these types of refurbishments.

"We simply don’t have the money to do everything we’d like to do for the community."
