A FLINTSHIRE-based brass band is celebrating yet another success as it qualifies for the British Open Championship for the very first time.

Northop Silver Band, first formed 130 years ago, recently qualified for the National championship finals where they will represent Wales at the Albert Hall in London in October.

Since then, another excellent performance at Blackpool's Winter Gardens in the Grand Shield has seen the band qualify for the British Open Championship to be held in Birmingham in September.

The band, under the leadership of Gareth Brindle, secured their place with an outstanding performance of Dynasty described as full of emotion, finesse and musicality.

An impressive display by the band's principal cornet, Alice Newbould, saw her gain the Best Soloist award, which is a major achievement among the 19 competing bands.

Northop Silver Band chairman Graham Williams said: "This is a fabulous achievement for a small village band competing against the creme de la creme of the brass world."
