The National League has given its reasoning for holding the play-off final in London, despite all the clubs in the promotion chase, being up north.

The League's decision to hold the final at the London Stadium on June 5, caused a lot of frustrations for Wrexham fans.

Not only does it clash with Wales' World Cup Play-off game against Scotland or Ukraine, it is also miles away from Wrexham and all other play-off contenders.

Reds' fans labelled the decision as 'scandalous' when it was announced it would be held at the London Stadium.

Many fans felt it would be more appropriate to hold it further north, to accommodate the seven teams in the play-off hunt. Villa Park and Old Trafford were two of the suggestions from Leader readers.

The League's General Manager Mark Ives has responded to a letter from North Wales MS Lesley Griffiths, in which she raised the concerns.

On the clash with Wales' play-off and the Queen's Jubilee, Mr Ives saidthe date of the play-off final was decided for the first week in June due to it being the first weekend to avoid clashing with other games, including the FA Trophy final.

He added that the promotion final was announced some time before the other two events and the opportunity to move the date was explored, but it was decided it was not a viable option.

In regards to the venue, Mr Ives said due to the fact Wembley was available, they explored the possibility of hosting it at Ashton Gate, as they did in 2021, but that was not an option.

"As early as October 2021 saw us start our journey searching for another venue. We of course need to ensure that venue is befitting for the Promotion Final and can accommodate the fan base of the two clubs who may reach the final.

"There are also many factors that must be considered not only by the League but also the host stadium which takes time to resolve.

"A challenge facing many venues is that pitch renovation works are commencing almost as soon as the last ball has been kicked in their domestic schedule, complicated even further for many clubs due to the early start in the 2022/23 season required due to the World Cup, being played in the mid-season in Qatar, making their venue unavailable for this fixture.

"I can assure you that we searched nationally, including in Wales, to consider all options open to us that could meet the requirements we have for the staging of our final game of the season.

"When considering all options, we are delighted to have secured the London Stadium, a legacy of the 2012 Olympics, which is a fitting venue for a final of this stature."
