This week Mikey, who is from Coedpoeth, unveiled a painting via Twitter which focused on two landmarks from his local area - Wrexham AFC's Racecourse ground and the Turf pub which sits in its shadow.

The stadium, the oldest international football ground in the world, has enjoyed some staggering attendances this season as the Reds chase promotion back to the English Football League.

The pub, run by Wayne Jones who just signed a further five year deal to stay on as landlord there this week, has become synonymous with the fooball club down the years.

Speaking to The Leader about why he chose to paint those two Mold Road venues, Mikey said: "Painting the turf has been something I’ve always wanted to do as I consider it a real wonder of Wrexham.

"I feel like the many positives coming from Wrexham AFC and the Wrecsam2025 city of culture bid successfully becoming finalists has definitely refocused my attention on the special town we live in.

"The painting has taken about five hours so far and I’d say I’m about half way.  I’ve always enjoyed painting and sketching while out and about walking locally in my teens and I guess my passion has just grown from there."

"The Turf is such a special pub, not only for it being literally attached to the football stadium, but for the fact that it really engages with the community in Wrexham for lots of good causes and I like that.

"I’d also like to congratulate Wayne Jones on his new deal as landlord of the Turf - he’s a real asset to Wrexham."

Mikey says a 'limited run of prints' of his latest painting will be made available soon.

He added: "I paint in oils, I like to paint the scene live at first, I like to work quickly when on location putting down the base colours and then finish the details off at home preferably with a beer.

"I don’t think I’ve had a place I haven’t enjoyed painting yet - I always find painting on busy streets a bit overwhelming but at the same time it’s nice to talk to passers by.

"The favourite place I painted was during a trip to Jerusalem in 2016. I really enjoyed the different light out there and the architectural history was mind blowing."
