THE proud landlord of the pub which has become synonymous with Wrexham AFC has penned a new deal that will keep him at the venue for at least another five years.

The Turf sits in the shadow of the club's Racecourse ground, which has been enjoying some outstanding attendances this season.

June of this year will mark 14 years in charge of the pub for Wrexham born-and-bred Wayne Jones.

Wayne, now 39, took over at the Turf when he was 25 years old, having come back from three years of travelling.

And it's fair to say very few years in years gone by will have been as special or as memorable as this one has been to date for Wrexham AFC and the community as a whole.

Since the takeover of the club by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney over a year ago, there has been a renewed buzz around the town.

The Reds have been in scintillating form of late, sitting second in the National League table and are currently on a 15-match unbeaten run.

But there was great news for Wayne too this week as he announced he had signed a new deal to carry on his role of Landlord at the Turf for at least another five years.

Wayne signed the contract with Hawthorn Leisure Pub Co this week, but revealed that the Turf is currently in the process of being taken over by Admiral.

He said: "This new deal will take me to 19 miles with the pub and I am thrilled to be signing again. The Turf and my customers are my life I live and breath it, it’s my dream job.

"This year has been one of the very best (for Wrexham AFC). To see so many people turning up to support the team is brilliant. The atmosphere is electric every game. If you're not in early you really struggle to get in. We get wonderful support.

"I think after a slow-ish start which was to be expected, we have been absolutely brilliant. Phil (Parkinson, club manager) and his team really are building something special. I am 100% certain we are going up as play-off winners."

Talking about those who have supported him and the Turf down the years, Wayne added: "To every single person who calls in be it once a month or 6 days a week, me and Shelley would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your support of our pub is very much appreciated. Here’s to the next five years!"
