THIS is what a Wrexham primary school will look after a multi-million pound revamp is completed.

Work is set to proceed on the £4.5 million extension and refurbishment of Ysgol yr Hafod in Johnstown - which will pave the way for both infants and juniors to be taught on the same site at Bangor Road.

The school is currently split into two locations, with the infants (Foundation Phase) based at a site on Melyd Avenue and juniors (Key Stage 2) at Bangor Road.

It is the Bangor Road site that is undergoing the work to allow infants to move into it.

The work is expected to start in late March, andis part of the 21st Century schools band B programme, with funding secured from the Welsh Government and Wrexham Council.

The school will be sending detailed information to parents and local residents around the foundation site in the next few days on the arrangements in readiness for Tuesday, March 1 - when the school reopens after the half term break.

The Leader:

Councillor David A Bithell, chair of the school governors, said: "The old school house in Bangor Road has been purchased and will form part of the new school for early years entitlement and will support children from ages 3-11 as an all through primary school.

"Exciting times, but with lots of challenges, and the school is working really hard to support parents and children."

The Leader:

Headteacher Alison Heale said: "The young people of Johnstown deserve the very best facilities, and when the work at Bangor Road is complete, we'll have an inspiring and modern learning environment that will benefit all of our children.

"Although the interim period will bring its challenges, we're well-prepared and ready to rise to those challenges. This is a hugely exciting time for pupils, staff and parents."

The timeline for the work (subject to change) for parents and residents is due to be as follows:

  • On February 18 the Bangor Road site will be closed to pupils to allow furniture to be packed and moved. The Melyd Avenue site will be open as normal.
  • February 21-25 is half-term week, so the school will be closed. Removal teams will finish moving furniture from the juniors' site at Bangor Road to the infants' site at Melyd Avenue.
  • There is a staff training day on February 28 and the school reopens on March 1. All pupils will return to the site at Melyd Avenue, allowing construction work to begin at Bangor Road.

The school crossing patrol will move from Bangor Road to the infants' site while construction work takes place.
