Almost £8,000 has been pledged so far in fundraising to support the family of a Wrexham man who died while on holiday in Magaluf.

Tomas Owen (Tom) Hughes, 20, of New Road, Stansty, Rhosddu, a former pupil of Rhosnesni High School, is believed to have fallen 65ft from a balcony while on holiday in Majorca on June 3.

Friends have since set up a GoFundMe page, donations have flooded in with the total standing at £8,800 as of Friday morning after just a few days.

One of the donations has been made by the East Clwyd Swimming League.

The message from Trevor Taylor left with that donation said: "This donation is from the East Clwyd Swimming League, as Tom represented Wrexham SC (Swimming Club) for many years and all member clubs in North Wales have been shocked and saddened by his loss."

Mr Hughes was employed by Freedom Leisure and was “much loved” by his friends at Rhosnesni Activity and Leisure Centre and the other Freedom Leisure centres where he worked.

On Wednesday a spokesman for Freedom Leisure said: “Tom was very popular with other members of staff and customers and will be sadly missed by all.

“Everyone has been deeply saddened.”

"Mr Hughes had transferred to the company from Wrexham Council in March 2016 and had recently been promoted to facility supervisor in recognition of his excellent performance over the past couple of years."

The spokesman added: “Tom was a conscientious, reliable, endearing young man who was a very valued member of the team.

“Our thoughts are very much with Tom’s family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are providing assistance to the family of a British man who died on June 3 in Mallorca, and are in contact with the Spanish authorities.”
