Wrexham residents warned as Facebook scams continue

The report is similar to those previously reported in that it asks sellers to use “family and friends” rather than goods and services to make a £40 payment. The post has now been deleted.

This time the event was for craft and makers fayre at the Memorial Hall, Wrexham on June 1 and 2 and was posted on a community Facebook page.

One person who was interested and asked further questions became suspicious when the responder seemed to be using Google Translate and they then reported it to the council's Trading Standards.

Trading Standards are advising everyone to be extremely careful when booking stalls for events and to check that the event actually exists before taking it any further.

The Memorial Hall has confirmed that this event is not booked.

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said: “This is extremely worrying for genuine local event organisers.

"With the popularity of Food Festivals, Artisan Markets and local fayres in Wrexham it’s important to check and double check that the event actually exists and the seller is legitimate.

“A quick email or phone call to the venue itself or to those whose land it is on is a good way to check if it’s taking place and if so, who’s organising it.”
