CHRIS HOLROYD is relishing the chance to finally get his 2018/19 season up and running.

Holroyd has endured a frustrating first-half of the campaign, playing just 562 minutes out of a possible 2,520 for the Reds, including just six starts from 28 matches in all competitions.

That is a far cry from last term when Holroyd was the one of the first name on the Wrexham team sheet when fit, the striker finding the net 13 times in the league.

And the 32-year-old is eager to get back on the pitch - and amongst the goals - starting at home against Boston United tomorrow afternoon.

Asked whether it has been frustrating watching from the sidelines as Wrexham got themselves in the promotion picture, Holroyd said: "It has been, yes.

"Going from last year where I played a lot of minutes and I got into my rhythm, which is good.

"I've played a lot of games in the last couple of years and it's been nice for me, but this year I've not played as much so I'm looking to get on the pitch."

Sam Ricketts, who has now left The Racecourse to take over the Shrewsbury hotseat, was an advocate of rotating his forward players.

But that didn't always appear to work, and Holroyd certainly favours the opportunity to build working relationships cultivated from a settled frontline.

"Speaking personally, as a striker you want to form partnerships and get used to playing with people," said Holroyd.

"You play with people in training but it's about creating that bond on the pitch with the players around you, which develops game by game.

"The rotation has not helped anyone form a partnership, which has been difficult."

With Ricketts gone and a new manager set to arrive in north Wales in the not too distant future, Holroyd wants to stake his claim for a regular starting role.

"I'm hoping so," said the former Chester youngster when asked whether a change of manager offered a clean slate.

"I want to get a run of games. I think I've only started two games in a row, which isn't enough for me.

"I need to be playing games and a good run of back-to-back matches, and hopefully I can get my season going."

Holroyd could be handed his seventh start of the season tomorrow as Boston visit The Racecourse in the FA Trophy first round.

The Pilgrims will be no pushovers, according to Holroyd, who said: "It's going to be a good challenge.

"I was chatting with Shaun and he knows quite a lot of their squad and they've got some good players.

"It will be a good game in a competition you want to do well in having played in the final with Macclesfield.

"The main focus as everyone knows is the league, but dropping out of the FA Cup it would be nice to have some sort of cup run."

And with the prospect of playing at Wembley should Wrexham reach the final for the third time, Holroyd insists that the competition won't be taken lightly by the promotion chasing Reds.

"There's been some great players who have never played at Wembley," he said.

"Fortunately for me I've played a couple of times at Wembley and it would be great for the lads who haven't had that to do it.

"But obviously we are a long way off that and lets get the job done against Boston first."
