LUKE SUMMERFIELD described Sam Ricketts as "magnificent" and says the Wrexham boss deserved to win his National League manager of the month award.

Ricketts received October's accolade after Wrexham came through the month unbeaten, the Reds picking up three wins and a draw in the league as well as progressing past Harrogate Town in the FA Cup after a replay.

Wrexham are currently top of the table and reached the second round of the cup thanks to a 2-0 win at Weston-super-Mare on Sunday, and Summerfield hopes the Reds can continue their good form so Ricketts, appointed manager at The Racecourse in May, can win more gongs.

"It shows how good a job he has done for us," said Summerfield. "It is nice for the gaffer, he deserves it for what he has done for us.

"He has been a magnificent manager, not just for the team and the squad but for the whole club.

"He shows how good a manager he is, how good a man-manager he is, and as a squad we are buzzing for him to win the accolades to show we are doing well which is the most important thing.

"If he can carry on winning them, we will be a happy camp."

Following a goalless first half, Summerfield gave Wrexham the lead six minutes after the break against National League South strugglers Weston and Stuart Beavon's late strike secured victory.

Although Wrexham didn't play to their full potential, Summerfield was pleased the Reds managed to step up a gear in the second half and book their place in the next round.

"We said at half-time we are still in the game," said Summerfield.

"We didn't play to the best of our ability first half, we all knew it was always going to be a tough FA Cup tie.

"We needed to carry on our form from the league and we proved that more in the second half, and it was nice on a personal level to get the first goal and ease the tie off a little bit.

"We need to kill games off and to get the second goal was a massive boost for us.

"We have had a few 1-0 wins this year where we have ground it out but we have got the capability and the firepower in the team and the squad that we need to get a second and third goal because we are capable of killing games off."

Wrexham are now unbeaten in 10 games and although maintaining the promotion challenge is the priority, Summerfield is pleased to be progressing in the cup.

"The most important thing was for us to get through to the second round, whether it be an unbelievable performance, a gritty one or whatever," added Summerfield.

"It proved that way with a nice 2-0 win so we are all very happy.

"The main aim is to carry on our league form and gain promotion.

"But it was a massive tie for us and Weston-super-Mare, and we have come away with a good win.

"However the game went, we needed to be in the second round of the cup and it has proven that way."
