SAM RICKETTS has told supporters to enjoy being top of the National League.

Wrexham took over as leaders for the first time since the start of September after beating Gateshead 3-1 on Saturday.

Although there is more than half of the season to go, Ricketts wants fans to enjoy the moment and says their backing will be crucial when Wrexham find the going tough in matches.

"We are all here because we want to be successful," said Ricketts.

"The fans come because they want to be entertained, they want to be successful so enjoy it.

"Enjoy where we are at right now, there is an awful long way to go and these are the moments when I want the fans to enjoy it.

"There will be plenty of occasions where we really need the fans behind us like on Tuesday night; we are not playing well, we are winning 1-0 and them driving us on to win the game is such a massive part for this club to be successful."

Victory extended the unbeaten run to nine games and Ricketts was delighted with the performance, insisting that was just as important as three points.

"Obviously delighted with being top of the table, it is nice and it is a reward for the players for the effort and hard work they have put in this season so far," said Ricketts.

"But for me personally the performance was the biggest thing, it really shows what this team potentially can do.

"The performance level was excellent. The control, especially in tight areas being able to play the ball, wasn't perfect but it was a massive step in the right direction.

"We are definitely improving as a side.

"We will never be perfect but we will just continue to try and improve all the time, and then we will see where that takes us."
