BRYAN HUGHES compared the team spirit in the Wrexham dressing room to that of promotion-winning teams he was part of in his successful playing career.

Former Wrexham midfielder Hughes is tasked with keeping the Reds on track for promotion and he celebrated a 1-0 win over Dagenham in his first game in charge last Saturday to remain among the title contenders.

It is just over a week since Hughes was announced as the club's third manager of the season and the good vibes coming out of the changing room have not been lost on the 42-year-old.

"We have got a really good team spirit, that dressing room is really strong," said Hughes.

"I have seen that before in my playing career, dressing rooms like that that have gone on and got promotion.

"I can feel the same sort of feeling in the dressing room when I walk in as some of the teams that I played for that went on and got promotion.

"It is important as a manager now to step back and let them do that themselves, let them keep building that.

"I will come in and make my thoughts known as and when I need to, and make sure the discipline and organisational side is still there.

"But as a squad and as a team, everything that I have seen so far has been very positive."

Although Wrexham boast the best defensive record in the National League, the Reds have only scored 38 goals in 32 games, the lowest of all the teams in the top 10.

Hughes has worked on the creative side in training which he hopes will lead to more goals without impacting on the solid defence.

"We are starting to get them into areas of the pitch where they can make the right decisions, they can pick the right passes, to get us the goals that can keep us building momentum this season," said Hughes.

"It is not just about who is going to score the goals, it is the final pass or cross that might be the thing that has been a little bit off at times.

"It is the finer detail that needs working on in the build-up to that before you get the finish so we have been looking at that a lot more in training this week.

"A lot of the sessions have been aimed towards that but not going away from our defensive responsibilities because that is where we have got our success this year.

"Defensively we have been very strong and that is why we are in a healthy position in the league."

Wrexham are targeting a third win in a row at Havant and Waterlooville tomorrow.

"We are in a good vein of form, two wins and two clean sheets, so we are going to go to Havant positive and hopefully get the right result," added Hughes.
