WREXHAM sprinter Amy Odunaiya blazed a trail with her university team mates to set a new Welsh record in the 4x200m indoor relay.

Racing at the British Universities and Colleges National Championships in Sheffield, Odunaiya and her Cardiff Met team mates stormed to victory in a collective time of 1:39.29.

The record-breaking time saw them top the podium ahead of Brunel (1:42.59) and Birmingham (1:43.22).

Odunaiya then added to a memorable weekend as she placed third in the 200m individual race with her time of 24.43 seconds.

This year’s Wrexham Half Marathon proved to be another overwhelming success, with close to 2,500 entrants taking part.

Wrexham runner James Mills clocked a fine time of 1:12:11 to finish ninth outright, with Altrincham AC runner Mohammad Abureeq (1:07:34) taking the race honours.

Deeside’s Lee Jones (1:12:38) was 11th, with Deestriders frontrunner Steven Hayes clocking a new PB of 1:14:12 to take the final place among the top 20 and clinch bronze in the V40 category.

Hayes was one of 18 Deestriders in action, with clubmate Scott Nixon (1:24:00) also impressing alongside Jay Jennions in the women’s race as she returned from injury to clock 1:34:45 to take the silver in the North Wales V35 race.

Buckley Runners man Jez Brown (1:15:58) ran strongly to finish 37th, while Wrexham’s Sean Merryweather (1:20:09) followed on in 82nd place.

Wrexham’s Emma Crowe (1:23:44) was the third fastest woman, and fastest overall in the W45 category.

Keely Smith clocked a new over-35 ladies West Cheshire club record time of 1:29:47.

Deeside runners excelled with some strong performances at the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships in Brecon.

Representing the North East Wales Schools team, Neisha Roberts and Eden Edwards starred in the year 8/9 junior girls race.

Roberts ran strongly to finish sixth outright, with Edwards close behind in eighth as both girls earned qualification for the Welsh team that will compete at the SIAB Schools International in Dublin on March 23.

Their Deeside clubmates were also in action, with Maddy James placing 30th, ahead of Eve Ratcliffe (37th), Robyn Beck (43rd) and Alanna Arrowsmith (51st).

In the senior girls race, Lauren Watchorn and Beth Dowsett produced excellent performances to finish in the top 10, placing fifth and seventh respectively.

Ifan Oldfield impressed at the Conwy Fell Race, where the Wrexham runner took the U23 race honours and fifth place outright after clocking 46 minutes flat.

Buckley’s Hayley Evans (53:41) finished 20th, placing ahead of Wrexham’s Yricka Roberts (1:09:58).

There was a new PB of 17:36 for Buckley Runners’ David White at the latest Erddig ParkRun, where he placed just ahead of Wrexham’s Richard Shearer (18:19).

Wrexham’s Harvey Davis (21:03) was sixth, ahead of Buckley’s David Jones (22:05) in 11th.

Sean Truett set the pace at Wepre’s latest ParkRun, as the Buckley man recorded a new PB of 18:50.

Deesider Stephen Jolly (21:06) and Wrexham runner Mike Robbins followed on in fourth and 11th respectively.

West Cheshire’s Laura Turley has grabbed a podium place in the 400m at the British Universities and Colleges Indoor Athletics Championships in Sheffield.

Turley, who recently retained the Welsh Indoor 400m title in Cardiff and posted a new personal best of 54.67 seconds at the British Indoor Championships in Birmingham, lead for most of the final in Sheffield and clocked 56.04 seconds.

This weekend’s race action starts on Saturday with the Rhyl 10 Mile Road Race, with the Welsh Cross Country Championships to start at 11am in Llanelli. The Ruthin 5k/10k gets underway at 9.30am on Sunday, ahead of the gruelling Clwydian Sheeptracks 28k Trail Race in Cilcain (10am).
