JENNY SUGARMAN admits there’s still areas of improvement to focus on after Wrexham returned to the top of the Adran Premier standings.

With The New Saints’ perfect record being ended by a 1-0 defeat at Cardiff City, the Reds regained top spot on the back of their 7-0 victory at home to Cardiff Met.

While it was another big win for her side, head coach Sugarman feels there’s even more to come from the defending champions.

Sugarman told the club: “I think we definitely huffed and puffed in parts of that game.

“You could see the desire from the players to do the right things, but perhaps over-trying and over-complicating things at times.

“A lot of the same runs and movements in that first half, particularly from the front-line.

“Like, all dropping down or not quite getting the connections.”

Despite this, the Reds were never in any danger of relinquishing the three points at The Rock.

Wrexham did claim the lead in the 14th minute as Katie Barker’s calm finish took her up to 11 goals for the campaign.

Just two minutes after that and things got even better for the home side.

A corner was cleared to Phoebe Davies on the edge of the box and she hit a brilliant effort into the top corner of the net.

Midway through the second half, Wrexham had their third goal. Ava Suckley hit the crossbar, but her effort deflected off keeper Violet Bell and into the goal.

Sugarman added: “I think as the game progressed, the goals came.

“I think that last 15 minutes was just a joy to watch, because you saw a group of players playing with a load of freedom, playing with a load of enjoyment.

“Connecting passes, creating chances, going again and again and again, and when they’re in that space, they’re a real force.”

Wrexham were well on top in the closing 20 minutes and Suckley extended the advantage with her second goal.

Maria Francis-Jones rifled in the next goal and when a penalty was awarded for handball, Faye Knox converted it.

Nat Clark’s shot then went in off the post as the hosts made it a magnificent seven.

Reflecting on the match, Davies said: “It was a game that we were in control of for most of, but they made it difficult for us.

“It wasn’t easy here today. A different opposition to last week in terms of how we had to play and how they defended against us.

“A lot of challenges put in front of us again that have been different to last week and the week before that.

“So, I thought we had a real patient performance today. A really confident performance, but plenty to build on and plenty to work on for the next few weeks.”
