DERBY DAY didn’t disappoint in a cracking encounter at Chester Road.
Wrexham opened their Division One North campaign with a 25-20 success away to rivals Mold, who did pick up a losing bonus points from their efforts.
It was Mold who started and ended the contest on the front foot, but a 25-minute spell either side of the interval won it for the visitors.
A pair of penalties had Mold 6-0 up inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour, before Wrexham responded through Reuben Roberts’ 34th minute try, converted by Jacob Hughes.
Hughes then went over for an unconverted try four minutes into the second half and he added the extras to Tyler Roberts’ score soon after that.
Two penalties from Hughes had his side 25-6 to the good, before Mold ended the contest with a pair of converted tries.
Caernarfon took over at the top with their 28-24 success at home to Pwllheli and Ruthin were on the wrong end of a 37-10 scoreline in their meeting with Bala.
Bethesda and Llangefni played out a 24-24 draw and the first Division Two North leaders of the season are Rhyl & District, who got the better of Abergele 51-20.
Colwyn Bay were 38-15 victors at Bangor in the other match that was played.
RGC’s Super Rygbi Cymru campaign opened with a 34-25 defeat at Newport.
The teams traded penalties in the opening stages, with Carwyn Penny’s three-pointer for Newport being matches by Billy McBryde.
A second successful penalty from McBryde handed RGC the lead, but winger Sam Morgan soon claimed Newport’s first try, converted by Penny.
The visitors’ first try came from Sam Williams, with McBryde on the money with the extras, but responses by Chay Foster-Smith and Ethan Phillips had Newport 24-13 ahead at the interval.
Finlay Baker and Henry Palmer came up with second half scored for the hosts, with further RGC tries going the way of McBryde and Williams.
In a real thriller, Pontypool edged out Llandovery 43-41 and Cardiff prevailed 27-17 at Carmarthen Quins.
Aberavon defeated Bridgend 36-17 and Ebbw Vale got the better of Swansea 40-12.
