CHESTER'S two-day Autumn fixture begins this afternoon on the Roodee where race-goers are in for a real treat, writes ROSS SHEPHERD.
Today’s action begins at 1.37pm with a restricted novice stakes over six furlongs.
Bearly Blue acts with cut in the ground and is well drawn in stall one and should go close although Readytorumble is another to consider with first time cheek pieces.
Dovecote should have all the answers in the four-runner seven furlong race at 2.12pm. He has shown plenty of ability in maidens to date and should make his mark here.
Chilly Breeze has been knocking on the door of late and will be hoping for his first win in over two years in the 2.47pm race.
Meet Me In Meraki is another runner looking for his first victory for some time and also has chances, along with Chester regular Oman and the Hugo Palmer entry Condotti.
Ten seasoned sprinters head to post at 3.17pm. Stable-mates Roman Dragon and Tricky Tel from Palmer’s Malpas yard both know their way around here and have chances.
Vintage Clarets is another one to take note of and has stall one to aid his chances. The seven year old also has an entry at Doncaster on Sunday and could be fired up to strike.
Another handicap follows on at 3.53pm with Scutari and Two Commanders both arriving after wins.
Local trainers are represented by Paws For Thought (Donald McCain) and the Palmer duo, Ran Amok and King Of Thunder.
Fourteen fillies’ race over seven furlongs at 4.28pm and So Sassy comes here after a couple of wins on the all weather and will be hoping to transfer her winning ways onto the turf.
Sugar Sugar and Diamont Katie are also worth closer inspection.
The card ends at 5.03pm with an apprentice handicap over two miles where Bollin Nell should be in the running after finishing second at Ripon.
Tomorrow’s meeting begins at 1.30pm with the listed Stand Cup.
The other feature contest is the Watergate Heritage Handicap run over two miles due off at 2.05pm.
The meeting comes to a close with a mile and a half handicap at 5.10pm exclusively for national hunt jockeys.
The fifth and final ‘classic’ of the season takes place at Doncaster tomorrow afternoon with the running of the 250th St Leger.
Aidan O’Brien’s Derby winner Christmas Day is the current favourite.
The key question is whether he gets the full St Leger trip as effectively as his rivals with Enceladus looking like posing the biggest threat after winning his last three races.
