WREXHAM’s youngsters produced a five-star performance in the opening game of the season.

And the club’s Professional Development Phase lead coach Craig Knight was full of praise for his side after a 5-0 home victory over Grimsby Town to kick-off the new Youth Alliance campaign. Jac Jones opened the scoring in the 18th minute and added his second after the break at Darland School.

Kian Nolan, Wes Graham and an own goal completed their success with a delighted Knight telling the club website: “I am really pleased, aside from that first 12 minutes, where we probably made some poor decisions at times.

“Once we started finding the spare player and moving the ball better and making better decisions, I think it was quite clear we then went on to dominate the rest of that first half.

“Aside from a few sloppy moments in the second half, we continued that in the second half.

“Those players that came on made a real impact in terms of their energy levels and got us back on the front foot, and we dominated the game for the most part.”

After netting four goals in his previous three pre-season games, Jones carried on his fine goal-scoring form and Knight added: “You know what you are going to get with Jac.

“He will always work hard for his team, and his numbers are always really high in terms of his metrics.

“He’s a really bright player who works out what the opposition press looks like and finds different areas of space.”

Knight also revealed that club legend Mickey Thomas spoke to the players ahead of the game.

“When you’ve got a Wrexham icon like Mickey Thomas speaking to the players and giving a few words of advice on what they should be doing away from training, pushing themselves to get that opportunity to play in the first team was obviously really inspiring.”
