IT’S a case of job done for Connell Rawlinson and his Chester side.
Rawlinson took the helm on an interim basis earlier this year with the task of helping the Blues climb into the National League North play-off positions and that target has been achieved following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to King’s Lynn Town.
There were two satisfied teams at the Deva Stadium, as King’s Lynn’s point ensured they avoided relegation.
Rawlinson told Chester FC TV: “That was the aim (play-offs), you know, when I took over.
“I think, obviously, we knew if we’d won the game, we’d probably finish fifth and we pushed at the end of the game.”
As it turned out, Chester finished the campaign in seventh spot, level on points with fifth-placed Buxton.
“It was one where we made a change, put (Connor) Woodsy right back, because Phil (Croker) was getting quite a bit of the ball.
“So, we put a more attacking player on there to try and win the game in the end. But... the aim was play-offs and, you know, I’m over the moon that we’ve achieved it, because it was near impossible, probably, when we took over, knowing what we had to do.”
In their play-off eliminator, Chester are heading to Macclesfield on Wednesday.
The winners will face a trip to Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday in the semi-finals.
Fylde claimed the title thanks to their 4-2 triumph at Merthyr, who missed out on a place in the play-offs.
Second-placed South Shields lost out 1-0 at Kidderminster, who finished the season in third place.
