Nant Conwy too strong for Wrexham in cup quarter-final

Looking to secure their spot in the semi-finals of the Division One North Cup, in-form Wrexham had a tasty tie at home to double-chasing Nant Conwy.

Hopes were in place that Wrexham could make it four wins on the bounce in all competitions, but ruthless Nant ran out 66-0 victors at Bryn Estyn Road.

Nant Conwy, favourites to claim this season’s Division One North title, were 31-0 up by the interval and there was no let-up when the second half got underway and they finished the day with 10 tries.

Caernarfon will play host to Nant Conwy in the semi-finals towards the end of next month. The other last-four encounter sees Bala up against Pwllheli.

The Division One North title is also on Pwllheli’s wish-list and they maintained their lofty aims with a 53-7 success at home to COBRA.

A bonus point win was of crucial importance to Pwllheli, who have three games in hand over Nant Conwy and they now trail the front-runners by 19 points.

Caernarfon are almost assured of a top-three finish following their 38-15 triumph at Llandudno, while Ruthin prevailed 33-12 at basement side Welshpool.

Rhyl & District completed their Division Two North campaign with a 17-10 triumph at Bro Ffestiniog.

Teirw Nant Conwy remain in second spot on the back of their 59-19 outcome versus Denbigh.

However, it’s Newtown who are favourites for that runners-up spot and they got the better of hosts Abergele 40-27.

Big wins were the order of the day in Division Three North East action.

Mold Athletic defeated Rhosllanerchrugog 97-12 and it finished 66-5 in favour of Shotton Steel versus Bro Gwernant.

Leaders COBRA Athletic defeated Ruthin Athletic 36-18.

RGC climbed into the Super Rygbi Cymru top-six with their 41-23 outcome at home to Carmarthen Quins.

There was a dominant second half showing from the North Walians as they pulled away in tricky conditions at Stadiwm Eirias.

In the ideal start, RGC had the lead through Connor Dever’s try and Billy McBryde added the conversion.

A try and Ifan Davies penalty nudged Carmarthen in front in a scrappy affair and Quins extended their lead when Ilan Phillips latched on to a kick ahead to score.

The hosts started the second half with intent and Sam Jones crossed the whitewash, with McBryde adding the extras.

Delwyn Jones went over for the next try and the lead was extended by McBryde’s long-range penalty from his own half.

Quins hit back with an unconverted score, but RGC weren’t about to be denied and they benefited from tries by Caio Parry and Sam Jones.

Carmarthen did grab another try, but the final word went to the home side. A powerful driving maul resulted in Osian Burt crossing the line, with McBryde adding the conversion points.

Leaders Ebbw Vale pipped Swansea 34-33 in a thrilling clash, while second-placed Cardiff were 45-14 victors at Llandovery.

Newport got the better of Bridgend 35-20 and Aberavon defeated Pontypool 38-14.
