OLLIE RATHBONE believes play-off contenders Wrexham have "smashed all the expectations" this season due to their lofty league position and now the midfielder wants to make it a "really special" season.
Phil Parkinson's men are in the Championship after securing a record-breaking three successive promotions and are challenging for a spot in the Premier League for the first time in the club's history.
The Reds are sixth in the table with nine games remaining, starting with the clash against Watford at Vicarage Road tomorrow night.
There's still a long way to go and a lot of points to play for but midfielder Rathbone feels Wrexham have already done a lot better than a lot of people expected after sealing a place in the second tier for the first time in 43 years.
"At the start of the season, a lot of people said 'stay up' or 'consolidate in the league', but I think the way the group has performed has smashed all the expectations which is what this club has done over the last few years," he said.
"We are in an incredible position and one we can really enjoy and just attack it.
"The Championship is renowned to be one of the most difficult divisions in Europe so to come up and conduct ourselves the way we have is a huge credit to everyone involved.
"With nine games to go, we have already had a fantastic season but hopefully we can make it a really special one."
Rathbone isn't getting carried away but he wants Wrexham to make the most of the opportunity in front of them.
"You might think if you finish sixth, next year you night finish second but it doesn't always work like that," he said.
"When you get this opportunity and are trying to get promoted again for a fourth time in a row, it would be incredible, it would be history.
"Nobody is getting carried away but it is a very realistic thing - we could be 12 games away from being in the Premier League which is incredible.
"But we are just focusing on the next game and see where it takes us."
