NEW year it may well be, but it’s the same old progress being made by Mold.
The Division Two North title favourites made it 11 wins out of 11 with a thumping 81-7 success at Abergele.
It was a Le Tissier special from Mold’s perspective, sharing seven of the tries. Caine crossed for four of the tries and there were a hat-trick of scores for Reece. Seth Geary converted eight of the visitors’ 13 tries.
Mold are now a mammoth 21 points clear of third-placed Rhyl & District, who suffered a 23-17 reverse at the hands of Teirw Nant Conwy.
Newtown, in second place, bolstered their promotion aims via a 21-12 success against Machynlleth and lowly Denbigh grabbed their first win of the campaign in style with their 86-12 thrashing of Llanidloes.
Wrexham’s scheduled Division One North contest at home to Caernarfon was shelved due to the wintry snap.
Nant Conwy took a giant stride towards retaining the title as the front-runners triumphed 15-8 in the match of the day at second-placed Pwllheli. Nant’s advantage at the top is now nine points.
Bala moved into the top-three with their 38-24 outcome at Llandudno, while Ruthin made sure of a 31-14 success versus COBRA.
Colwyn Bay hauled themselves out of the bottom-two courtesy of a crucial 29-22 win at Welshpool. Bethesda are now in the relegation zone on the back of their 34-7 loss at Llangefni.
Just one match went ahead in Division Three North East, where Ruthin Athletic prevailed 40-8 at Shotton Steel.
RGC were involved in a thrilling Super Rygbi Cymru encounter at Swansea, with the All Whites coming out on top 40-35.
Swansea began strongly in the opening five minutes and they pinned RGC back in their own half.
Once the north Wales side settled, they grew into the game with Dion Jones taking a high ball confidently and launching an attack through Caio Parry.
The first score came when Billy McBryde cleverly kicked to the wing, allowing Parry to collect and score the opening try. McBryde added the conversion points.
RGC continued to build pressure and from a powerful lineout and driving maul, McBryde came up with the next try and he duly added the extras.
Swansea responded with centre Joe Thomas’ score, converted by Llew O’Brien, only for RGC to reply via Billy McQueeney’s effort, with McBryde again kicking the two-pointer.
Just before the break, O’Brien converted Thomas’ second try, while the visitors had their bonus point try soon after the restart when Daf Thirsk crashed over and McBryde nudged the conversion.
Back came Swansea and they took the lead through tries by Matt Aubrey, Liam Lloyd and Ieuan Cornelius.
Thomas grabbed his third try as the hosts moved further ahead, while Sam Jones’ late try for RGC set up a grandstand finish.
In the top match, leaders Ebbw Vale beat second-placed Llandovery 41-14. Elsewhere, Newport got the better of Carmarthen Quins 33-7.
