WYCOMBE WANDERERS made up ground in the race for automatic promotion in League One but Phil Parkinson will take his side's position with four games remaining because Wrexham's destiny is still in their own hands.
The Reds were held to a goalless draw against Wigan Athletic at The Brick Community Stadium on Saturday while the Chairboys - the main rivals for a top-two finish behind champions Birmingham City - scored a late winner to beat Stevenage 1-0.
Although still second in the table, Wrexham are now only one point ahead of Wycombe with four games remaining but Parkinson remains upbeat in the quest for an historic third successive promotion.
"We'd rather be a point ahead than a point behind so we'll take where we are but there's always a an element of disappointment when I come away from a game and I felt we haven't done enough," he said.
"But on our travels, we've only lost the Reading game over a lot of away games, that's a great achievement for us and it's got us in a good position.
"We need to get the lads back in Monday and have a quick review of this performance.
"We're not going to go too much over it because we've got to move on quickly to Bristol Rovers on Friday.
"Let's be honest, if someone had said to us at the start of the season that we would be a point clear in second with four games to go - two at home and two away - we'd have took that all day.
"We have just got to make sure we're ready."
Wrexham failed to have a shot on target all game and although his side were well below par in the contest which kicked off at lunchtime, Parkinson stressed the importance of not losing and getting something from the game.
"Sometimes these early kick offs, for whatever reason, have a kind of flat feel to the game," he added.
"It's not just us. It's when you watch other games with a 12:30pm kick-off, they have a strange feel and I felt we made some strange calls with the ball in the first half.
"But the lads stuck to the task which is important because if you don't win, you make sure you get something.
"We defended well, we've blocked things even in the first half when we were called upon and made sure that our rear guard was strong to make sure we took something from the game."
