SAM SMITH is off and running for Wrexham and the striker can't wait to play in front of a packed Racecourse when he hopes to add to his goal tally in the push for promotion.
Brought in from Reading for a club record transfer fee in the winter transfer window, Smith got off the mark for his new club when he netted in Saturday's 2-0 win at Northampton Town, helping keep the Reds third in League One and only two points behind second placed Wycombe Wanderers.
"It's a special moment, a moment I'll never forget," said the 26-year-old.
"More importantly, it was a good performance and three points.
"It was an extra reward scoring a goal, hopefully I can keep contributing and help push for promotion."
Smith scored after racing onto Mark Howard's long clearance but it's not the first time he's been assisted by a goalkeeper.
"I have a few times," he said. "I always chat to him and say if you catch it in your hands, I'm always looking to get in behind early because defenders aren't prepared for it
"It's something that I like doing and I know it can be a threat.
"I spoke to the goalkeeper and it worked."
Having found the back of the net 11 times for Reading this season, Smith is fourth top scorer in the division with 12 goals.
The striker's spectacular half-volley for the Royals against Cambridge United - one of his previous clubs - earned him the League One Goal of the Month Award for January.
"It was a weird one because I got given the award at my new club, scoring for my old club against another old club," said Smith.
"That was a special goal for me and hopefully I can produce a few more."
Smith made his home debut for Wrexham in last Tuesday's 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers which secured a clash with Peterborough United at The Racecourse in the EFL Trophy semi-finals next Wednesday,
Nearly 7,600 fans were at the iconic north Wales stadium and Wrexham were backed by more than 1,400 travelling supporters at Northampton but Smith is looking forward to playing in front of a sell-out crowd against play-off contenders Leyton Orient tonight.
"The fans was incredible at Northampton. They filled both the end and the side," he said.
"They sang all game and away from home, it is so important to have such a good fan-base.
"I'm excited to see a full stadium on Tuesday.
"I played there in the EFL Trophy last week and I am really excited against Orient.
"There are no easy games in this league and you've got to maximise being at home and take all three points so we'll be looking to do that again."
Wrexham are chasing league and cup success with Smith adding: "You've got to capitalise on that now.
"We don't want any regrets, every game is just as important as the next one so all focus on Tuesday now.
"It's going to be a difficult game. I've played Orient this season, they're a very good team and in form."
