WREXHAM have completed the signing of striker Sam Smith from Reading for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old has put to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal, with the option of an additional year.

A former Reading academy graduate, Smith returned to the Royals in the summer of 2023 after a two-year stint at Cambridge United and he netted 26 goals in 59 League One appearances.

Eleven of those came this season, leaving Smith as the fourth highest scorer in the third tier.

Smith originally joined Reading after an early spell in the youth system at Manchester United and he was handed his first professional contract in the summer of 2016

During his time at The Madejski Stadium, Smith had loan spells with Bishop's Stortford, Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town, Cambridge, Tranmere Rovers and Cheltenham Town.

He left the Royals at the end of the 2020-21 campaign having found the back of the net once in eight league outings, with another goal coming in the Carabao Cup.

Smith signed for Cambridge, where he had bagged eight goals during his loan stint, on a permanent basis in the summer of 2021 and he struck 35 times in all competitions during two seasons with the U's.

Out of contract at the end of the 2022-23 season, Smith opted to return to Reading and he was also a regular on the scoresheet for the Royals.

On signing for Wrexham, Smith told the club: “It feels amazing to join the club and I’m happy that the deal is over the line.

“It was an unbelievable experience to play against the club at the STōK Cae Ras and the atmosphere really stuck with me.

“I’m excited to be a part of the journey now and I want to try and help the club achieve its ambitions.”

On his signing, manager Phil Parkinson said: “Sam is a player we’ve been pursuing for a while. He’s a striker who’s done really well over the last few seasons and he’s at a great age.

“He’s a fantastic addition to the squad.”
