STEVE PARKIN was delighted it was his side’s turn to score a late goal as Wrexham came from behind to beat Blackpool 2-1 at a fogbound Racecourse to stay third in League One.
The Seasiders took an early lead but Paul Mullin equalised with a stunning volley before the break and Steven Fletcher converted a penalty two minutes from time to secure three points.
Wrexham conceded last-gasp equalisers in the previous two games at home to Cambridge United and away at Bristol Rovers but Fletcher made sure that the Reds were celebrating on this occasion to the delight of Parkin, keeping the Reds three points behind leaders Birmingham City.
“We are really delighted,” said assistant manager Parkin.
“We had the sadness of the last home game when we conceded late and we played very well at Bristol Rovers but it was a painful end to the game so for us to get the late goal was really important.
“I think the way the lads played second half, it was probably justified.
“First half we didn’t quite have the edge that we wanted in the game and sometimes you have to give the opposition credit.
“They got an early goal which was disappointing from our point of view but they are a good side away from home.
“We weren’t quite bang at it first-half both as a team and individually, the message at half-time was to have a whole-hearted Wrexham performance and let’s lock attacks in.
“Get on the front foot rather than on the back foot, switch play from one side to the other and we were delighted with the way the lads applied themselves.”
Mullin, back in the starting XI for the first time since early November, scored just his fourth goal of the campaign and second in the league when he controlled Ollie Palmer’s flick-on and scored with a sensational left-foot volley from just inside the area.
Wrexham’s talisman over the last three seasons, Mullin hasn’t fired this term but Parkin knows what the 30-year-old is capable of.
“As we well know over the years, he’s got that finish in him,” added Parkin. “Left foot or right foot from distance.
“He has got a violent strike and I am delighted for him and delighted for everybody that he has been able to smash one in which is good.
“He has just got to keep his head down and work hard, and I’m sure more will come.”
