SUPPORTERS are eagerly awaiting Phil Parkinson’s first new signing of the summer knowing the Wrexham manager’s recruitment has been of a high standard.

Parkinson took charge at The Racecourse in July 2021 and he has been backed in the transfer market by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

It has paid dividends with Wrexham clinching the National League title following a record-breaking 2022-23 campaign before finishing runners-up in League Two last term, securing back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club’s history.

With the Reds back in League One for the first time since 2004-05, Parkinson has released nine players to make room for fresh faces but he is yet to announce any new additions so far during the off-season.

Linked with a host of players, including Wales international midfielder Joe Morrell who plays for Portsmouth, Parkinson insists he won’t rush into making signings for the sake of it and has put the emphasis on quality.

There has certainly been a lot more hits than misses when the Reds’ boss has bolstered his squad over the last three years and here are his five best signings.

1. PAUL MULLIN: A prolific goalscorer for Cambridge before signing for Wrexham in the summer of 2021, Mullin picked up where left off.

The striker has been leading scorer at The Racecourse every season since joining the Reds and he bagged his 100th goal for the club on route to promotion last season.

A man for the big occasion, Mullin scored crucial goals during the run-in and now has 105 for Wrexham, making him the club’s seventh top scorer of all time.

There was more individual recognition for Mullin who claimed the Player of the Season award for a record-breaking third year in a row.

2. ELLIOT LEE: Another member of the squad who has played at a higher level but he dropped down to the National League with Wrexham and played a key role in helping the Reds reach League One.

A playmaker who causes opposition defences lots of problems, Lee is always capable of making something happen and he’s also got a good eye for goal, finding the net regularly over the last two years.

Lee was named in the National League and League Two Team of the Season during both of Wrexham’s promotion seasons and he will have a huge part to play when Parkinson’s men make the step up in 2024-25.

3. TOM O’CONNOR: A midfielder who can also play at centre-back, O’Connor has proved to be an excellent signing.

O’Connor is brilliant on the ball and makes things tick in midfield but he also played a key role at the back in both promotion campaigns.

A rolls-royce defender who never looks flustered, Wrexham look a lot more solid when O’Connor plays at the back, providing real quality as the left-sided centre-half.

4. ANDY CANNON: You can see why Cannon has spent the majority of his career in the Football League and played as high as the Championship.

Cannon is a box-to-box midfielder who took time to get up to speed after joining Wrexham in December 2022 but enjoyed a strong finish to the first promotion campaign.

Although he had made a slow start to last season, Cannon was one of the stand-out players after the turn of the year and he weighed in with some vital goals as Wrexham went straight up again.

5. JAMES MCCLEAN: Has had a massive impact after joining Wrexham for the 2023-24 season and was a consistent performer in a number of positions.

Although he played the majority of his games at left wing-back, former Republic of Ireland international McClean also turned out for Wrexham in midfield and attack.

Despite being aged 35, McClean’s fitness and athleticism is of a high standard and he’s become a huge fans’ favourite at The Racecourse.
