ACTON and Penyffordd Lions were celebrating over the weekend.

In the cup final double header at Airbus, Lions lifted the Premier Cup in a tie that went all the way to extra time against Connah’s Quay Town.

It was Lions’ top scorer Ben Hughes who conjured up the winner in the 99th minute.

Liam Hughes had given Lions the lead midway through the first half but Pascal Gomez hit back for the Quay in the 59th minute.

Hours later and the silverware was being handed out to Acton, who beat Aston Park Rangers 4-1 in the Two Counties Cup final.

A goal in the first minute from Liam Davies gave Acton the perfect start and top scorer Sam Giles made it 2-0 four minutes later.

Aston played 70 minutes of the final with only 10 men after Jonny Crossley was sent off for two bookable offences but they did pull a goal back through Karl Lloyd in the 26th minute.

That’s how it stayed until stoppage time when Ethan Callaghan and Luke Hughes put the gloss on Acton’s victory.

And secretary Pete Callaghan dedicated the win to manager Joe Garner.

“Unfortunately our team manager, Joe Garner, couldn’t make the game as his partner went into labour on the morning of the match,” said Callaghan. “So the win was for him, as he puts so much effort into both the men’s and girls sections.

“It was a hard fought win against a very good APR team who were unrecognisable from their league position.

“The game was very tight until we scored our third late on.

“It was only the second trophy in our history and just reward for the hard work everyone has put in over the years.”

Corwen are doing their best to throw the title away as they slipped to another Premier Division defeat in the North East Wales League.

FC Queen’s Park beat them 2-0 with in-form Sean Skimmings scoring both.

Corwen remain two points clear of second-placed Connah’s Quay and six ahead of Penyffordd, who they still have to play twice this month.

Greenfield moved away from the danger zone after a 10-1 romp at home to relegated Ruabon Rovers.

Ryan Jones helped himself to seven goals with Lewis Williams, Matthew Bennett and Bailey Roberts also scoring. Michael Jones replied for Ruabon, who could only field eight players.

Tom Douglas (2) and Drew Wickens scored for Rhostyllen in a 3-3 draw against Mynydd Isa, whose marksmen were Sam Wainwright (2) and James Beck.

In the Championship, Yr Wyddgrug beat Brymbo 5-3 thanks to Shaun Hughes (2), Lewis James, David Jones and Henry Jones. Bradley Reid, Liam Davies and Josh Gunwhy hit back for Brymbo.

Champions FC Plas Madoc signed off with a 3-2 win at Holywell United, whose scorers were Kieran Durkan and Rhys Powell. Ryan Jakovlevs, James Williams and Nicky Williams won it for promoted Plas Madoc.

Runners-up Gronant were beaten 3-2 at Sychdyn for whom Tom Mitchell, Kieran Jones and Aaron North did the damage. Kallum Pierce and Aidan Bell replied.
