A GOAL in each half made sure Cardiff City claimed the domestic treble and denied Wrexham women silverware following a memorable season.

Steve Dale's Reds weren't just in the Welsh Cup final to just make up the numbers and they had the better of the second half against league champions Cardiff.

The Bluebirds just know how to pick up trophies, though, and they eventually did enough to claim a 2-0 win in front of more than 1,700 at Newport's Rodney Parade.

Wrexham threatened early on with Brooke Cairns closing down Ceryn Chamberlain and she got a touch on the Cardiff keeper's clearance.

At the other end, Rhianne Oakley set up Eliza Collie, who mishits from 10 yards out and Oakley fired over with the follow-up.

As the chances continued to come, Lili Jones' superb pass played in Carra Jones and her effort from 16 yards forced a diving save from Chamberlain.

However, it was Cardiff who got the opener after a quarter-of-an-hour.

Oakley, the danger-woman in the opening stages, was in acres of space to burst into the box and her strike found the corner of the net.

That was the first goal Wrexham have conceded in the Welsh Cup this season, but the Reds went close following a scramble from a corner that went just wide.

Carra Jones had an effort from a quick throw-in, but Cardiff defender Bowen got in a crucial block, while Delyth Morgan took centre stage as the half drew to a close.

Emma Beynon had a side-footed effort from 20 yards, with Morgan saving well to her left.

That save was a good one, but the next one was even better.

Molly Kehoe with a great chance after bursting into the box from the left, but Morgan stood strong to deny her.

Wrexham dominated the ball when the second half got underway.

They had the first chance of the half when Carra Jones played in Rebecca Pritchard, but a terrific block from Beynon halted the danger.

Rosie Hughes came off the bench for the last 22 minutes.

While the Reds had the better of the possession in the second half, they couldn't just create that one gilt-edged chance to draw themselves level.

At the other end, Cardiff did have the ball in the net through Oakley again, but she was adjudged offside.

That one chance Wrexham wanted came in the final 10 minutes.

The ball found Amber Lightfoot on the left and her effort was brilliantly saved by Chamberlain, while Hughes couldn't put in the follow-up.

After five minutes of added time was confirmed, Cardiff made sure of their victory with a stunning 30-yard strike from Emma Beynon.

Then, before the full-time whistle, Eliza Collie hit the post from close range.

That would have been so tough on the Reds had that gone in, but they can hold their heads so high - and they will be keen to challenge for silverware once again next season.
