LILI JONES is looking forward to a “massive” occasion as Wrexham aim to end a memorable season on a real high.

Steve Dale’s Reds have already made their mark in their first season at Adran Premier League level, achieving a third-placed finish.

Now, their sights are firmly set on the Welsh Cup, with a Sunday final showdown lined up against league champions Cardiff City.

Midfielder Jones told the club’s YouTube channel: “It’s absolutely massive.

“You know, Cardiff, we’ve conceded a few against them, so we won’t let that happen on Sunday and we’re going to give them a proper game for 80 minutes and hit them on the counter, hopefully, and score a few goals against them.”

While Wrexham have adapted well to life in the top flight, they haven’t yet sampled victory against Cardiff.

The last clash between the sides was the final match of the league campaign at the Cardiff City Stadium, with the league winners coming out on top 5-1.

Meanwhile, top goalscorer Rosie Hughes says the side becoming semi-professional this season has paid off in performances on the pitch.

After claiming the women’s player of the year accolade, she said: “The growth, even down to the facilities or the physio we get.

“It’s the little things. I don’t now go to the shop on the way to training to pick up a drink, you know.

“We have that provided for us. It’s massive and it’s massive for the women to have finished top-four, because the first time that we were promoted, I personally thought we might be escaping kind of relegation.

“But, no, actually I think I’ve shocked myself and I think we’ve shocked a lot of other people that we finished in the top-three and this Sunday, obviously, we’ve got to a cup final and who knows what may happen in the final.

“We could show everyone that, you know, we’re the best team in Wales.

“So, yeah, the growth, that’s down to all the background people as well. It’s not just us on the pitch... it’s managers, everyone else that’s involved to make this club grow and again, the supporters and the fans.

“We wouldn’t be where we are without them, either.”

Sunday is also an occasion that Phoebe Davies is looking forward to.

Davies claimed the players’ player of the season award in the week and she said: “A little confidence boost for Sunday, that’s for sure.

“But we’ll be back in training... preparing for Sunday. A big game.”

Sunday’s Welsh Cup final will be played at Newport’s Rodney Parade, kicking off at 5.25pm.

It’s also a big weekend for Flint Town United.

There’s a battle of the unbeaten sides in store on Sunday as Flint meet Pwllheli in the North Wales League promotion play-off at Llandudno.

Pwllheli won all 10 of their matches to win the North West League this season, while Flint triumphed in all 12 of their encounters to claim the North East Wales League crown.

The in-form rivals are set to become familiar opponents over the next few weeks.

They’ve also been paired against each other in the semi-finals of the Betty Pickering Cup, with the tie set to be played in mid-May.
