PROMOTION has been a team effort but Phil Parkinson praised Arthur Okonkwo and Elliot Lee after the duo were included in the League Two Team of the Season.

Okonkwo has been in fantastic form since joining Wrexham on a season-long loan from Premier League giants Arsenal and kept his 15th clean sheet in all competitions on Saturday as the Reds thrashed Forest Green Rovers 6-0 at The Racecourse to secure a top-three finish with two games to go.

Although he suffered a broken jaw in the 2-2 draw at Harrogate on November 28, Okonkwo only missed three games before returning to action when he wore a protective mask and Parkinson says it was key that the 22-year-old wasn't recalled by the Gunners in January.

"Arthur has been immense for us, he was a very important signing for us when Ben Foster retired," said Parkinson.

"I thought it was a key moment for us when we secured the signing of Arthur and kept him in January as well.

"I remember saying to the owners and Shaun Harvey in January that if we didn't do anything but we didn't lose anybody and made sure we kept Arthur, that would be a good transfer window because he has been great for us and thoroughly deserves that.

"You have got to remember he broke his jaw as well, he came back and played with a protective mask for a while.

"He had to show bravery as well to come back and dive at peoples feet like he does and that is great tribute to him."

Lee, the only Wrexham player who has featured in every league game this term, opened the scoring against relegation-threatened Forest Green to take his tally to 16 goals for the season.

Only three of those have come since the turn of the year but Parkinson insists the playmaker has contributed so much more than goals.

"Elliot has been phenomenal," he added.

"When you look at the work that Elliot does for the team defensively, and working in the structure of the team, to get 16 goals from midfield is outstanding for him.

"When you have such a phenomenal start to the season, teams are going to double-up and get on him quickly like we do to opposition key players.

"But that opens up space in other areas of the pitch for other players, and Andy Cannon on that right-hand side has flourished in recent months.

"One thing about Elliot is when the goals haven't come, he has still worked incredibly hard for the team and that is important. The overall contribution is an outstanding one.

"Arthur and Elliot can savour those awards even more being part of a promotion winning team."
