GEORGE EVANS says Wrexham can't afford to dwell on a missed opportunity knowing their fate remains in their own hands with five games of the season remaining.

Phil Parkinson's men go into tomorrow's game against relegation threatened Colchester United at The JobServe Community Stadium sitting third in League Two, just four points behind leaders Stockport County and on the same tally as second placed Mansfield Town.

Wrexham had the chance to extend their advantage in the automatic-promotion places but lost 1-0 to in-form Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday so the Reds stayed two points clear of MK Dons in fourth spot.

Although they could be in an even stronger position in the quest for a top-three finish, Evans insists Wrexham won't be licking their wounds.

"It was a big opportunity and we didn't take that but we are still in a fantastic position," said the midfielder.

"We need to be much better and start taking chances like this, it is a crucial time of the season.

"There are going to be a lot of twists and turns but we are in control of our fixtures at the moment, it is in our hands.

"We need to be better and I think we will be.

"It was a disappointing result but we can't dwell on it too much now.

"We need to dust ourselves down and make sure it doesn't happen again.

"We have got five massive games, we all know that and we all know what it means to the club as well."

Evans says Wrexham just need to focus on taking care of their own business and not worry about their promotion rivals.

"We can't think of anything else other than the next game. We have got a big game at Colchester now," said Evans.

"All we can do is take care of our business and it will be enough.

"The fixtures are in our own hands and we know what we are capable of so it is up to us to just focus on ourselves and not worry about anybody else.

"As long as we keep that focus, we will be fine."

Evans, who arrived at The Racecourse from Championship outfit Millwall in the summer transfer window, added: "It is a fantastic squad and it is a massive football club.

"These people are winners and when we don't win, it hurts a lot more.

"We are capable of beating everyone in this league, but football is never that simple.

"It wasn't our day against Doncaster but we will make sure that we push on and have a strong end to the season."

Evans missed nine games after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win at Sutton on February 13 but has come on as substitute in the last two matches and hopes to be closing in on a return to the starting XI.

"I am feeling much better," added the 29-year-old. "I slipped at Sutton and did my hamstring.

"It was a bit unfortunate but it is a part of football.

"Hopefully I can get back in the side and really kick on, and start getting some really good results."
