PHIL PARKINSON was disappointed Wrexham missed the chance to extend their advantage in the League Two automatic-promotion places after losing 1-0 to in-form Doncaster Rovers at The Eco-Power Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The third placed Reds saw the three teams immediately below them in the table - MK Dons, Barrow and Crewe Alexandra - fail to win their games the previous day.

Wrexham were looking to put more distance between themselves and the chasing pack but they lacked a cutting edge in the final third as Doncaster secured a firth win in a row.

Defeat keeping the Reds two points clear of fourth-placed MK Dons but Parkinson, whose side have five games remaining in the quest for a top-three finish, admits it was a missed opportunity.

"We had a chance to put a gap between us and the teams below us and we haven't taken it," said Parkinson.

"It was there for us. It was handed to us on Monday with the results and we haven't stepped through the door and taken it.

"It is disappointing because we had a chance, albeit against a good team, to put a real gap between us and the chasing pack, and we just haven't done it.

"It is as simple as that. But there is still plenty of football left to play and we will get ready for Colchester at the weekend."

Wrexham remain four points behind leaders Stockport County and on the same tally as second placed Mansfield Town, although the top-two have a game in hand.

But with the teams behind them playing catch-up, the Reds' destiny remains in their own hands and that was the consolation Parkinson could take.

"It is in our hands and we will take the position we are in," he added.

"We will draw a line through this and concentrate on the weekend.

"That is another game chalked off and there are five to go.

"We have got to be ready for Colchester, and we will be."
