PHIL PARKINSON was not surprised with how well in-form Doncaster Rovers played as Wrexham's automatic promotion hopes took a dent.

Rovers triumphed 1-0 in the League Two showdown at The Eco-Power Stadium, with the south Yorkshire outfit on top in the first half and scoring the only goal one minute before the break.

Wrexham rallied late in the second period but only had a couple of decent chances to get something out of the game and mid-table Doncaster registered a fifth successive win.

Parkinson praised Doncaster but admits his side could have played a lot better, especially in the opening half.

"I said to the lads that for the last 10 games, Doncaster are top of the table," said Parkinson,  whose side were backed by 2,240 travelling Reds fans.

"A lot of players have come back from injury and obviously they are a good side but so are we.

"They were at the races that little bit more than we were in the first half. We couldn't get any continuity in our play.

"They were just sharper than us and their quality was better. That's because they were really on the money.

"We had patches but we gave the ball away too cheaply in that first half. We didn't play with enough care and quality, we let crosses come into the box too easily and we got punished for one.

"We've had a real go second half and were unlucky for the goal that got disallowed not to stand.

"You have got to give Doncaster credit, they played well but that didn't surprise me.

"In patches we were okay but not enough to deserve to have won the game, although we probably deserved a draw at the end."

McCann was proud of his side's display.

“It was a really good performance from us,” he said.

“I was really proud of the boys. I thought we were really good as a team defensively. They were always going to have a bit of a spell and in the last 10 or 15 minutes they just kept getting bigger and bigger with the subs they were putting on.

“We wanted to be aggressive against them and I think you saw that over the first 75 minutes. We stepped off it after that and we didn’t get to the ball quick enough so they put a bit of pressure on.

“But apart from that, for 75 minutes I thought we were very, very good. It’s another clean sheet, a good performance, three points and a good win."
