PAUL MULLIN is close to reaching a huge milestone for Wrexham but the striker insists promotion is the priority rather than personal accolades.

The 29-year-old scored his 18th goal of the season in Saturday's brilliant 3-1 win against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park which keeps Wrexham third in League Two.

Brought in from Cambridge United in the summer of 2021, Mullin has now bagged 97 goals for the Reds.

Although he is closing in on the century mark, the prolific frontman is only concerned about securing a top-three finish with seven matches remaining.

"All I care about is getting promoted," said Mullin, who was again handed the captain’s armband on Saturday.

"If I didn't score another goal and we went up then my job is done.

"It will be a great achievement, but it's not something I really think about.

"It will be lovely to get there as quickly as possible, but equally if I don't get there at all but we keep winning every week then I'll be happy."

Wrexham were leading 2-0 through Andy Cannon's brace when Mullin got on the scoresheet against the Mariners just before the half-time interval.

Jacob Mendy's shot was blocked by a defender in the area but the ball fell for the striker who turned and smashed a stunning left-footed volley into the back of the net.

"Obviously I know the goal doesn't move and I know where it is at all times during the game," said Mullin.

"It was just full concentration on making sure I connected properly and hit it back across the goalkeeper.

"From there hopefully no-one is on the line and it manages to go in, and it was a great finish."

Wrexham got back to winning ways after only taking one point from the previous two games at The Racecourse, with Phil Parkinson's side drawing 0-0 with Harrogate before suffering a 1-0 derby defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

Missed chances proved costly in the double-header but Mullin wasn't pressing the panic button.

"They were disappointing results-wise but I thought we played really well in those games," he added.

"Against Grimsby we had four shots in the first-half and scored three goals while in the other games we had more than 25 shots. It just happens.

"It was more for the fans to get over the disappointment, we are quietly confident in how we play and we know on a different day the last two games could have been a totally different story.

"We played really well against Grimsby again and won.

"I thought we were very good. We controlled the game, won first and second balls, the defenders cleared everything and we made brilliant passes, and Andy finished the chances he had and I managed to tuck one away too.

"It was a brilliant first half for us. We came back out in the second half and controlled the game and made sure they didn't get back into it, but also not over-commit bodies being 3-0 up."
