WREXHAM'S destiny remains in their own hands and Luke Young wants to keep in that way in the race for promotion from League Two.

Hopes of a top-three finish took a dent after only taking one point from the last two games, with the goalless draw against Harrogate followed by a 1-0 defeat derby to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

But the Reds remain third in the table, five points adrift of leaders Mansfield Town and one behind second placed Stockport County who have a game in hand, while MK Dons in fourth are on the same tally as Phil Parkinson's men but have played a match more.

Wrexham have eight games remaining in the quest for a second successive promotion, starting with Saturday's trip to lowly Grimsby Town, and Young is looking for one final push.

"We got one point out of six from two home games and stayed in the same position," said the Reds' captain.

"No-one has pulled away too much other than Mansfield but MK Dons have obviously closed the gap to the same number of points as us.

"There are points we have missed out on and if we had won one of those games, we could have put ourselves in an even stronger position than what we are in and a bit of breathing space behind us.

"But it is still in our own hands and as long as we are picking up points and we are winning, we know that regardless of what the other teams do they are not going to be able to catch us.

"We can control what happens to an extent, we have just got to focus on ourselves and go 100 per cent full throttle between now and the end of the season, starting on Saturday.

"It is almost like eight cup finals now."

Wrexham clinched automatic promotion from the National League following a record-breaking 2022-23 campaign, with the Reds coming out on top in a thrilling title race with Notts County.

Three teams go straight up to League One but the competition is fierce with Crewe Alexandra and Barrow also in contention, although Young is happy with the position the Reds are in going down the final straight.

"We know what it takes after doing the business last year," said Young.

"We know the pressures of it, especially with how we went toe-to-toe with Notts County and could not slip-up.

"I know there's are an extra two automatic promotion spots this year but you still can't slip-up and you have still got to be on it because of how tight it is.

"Teams are chasing you down and you don't want teams to get away from you.

"If you ask anybody, being in this position with eight games to go you would definitely snap your hand off and take it."

Wrexham lacked a cutting edge in the final third in last week's two home games but Young remains upbeat.

"You want to play well but the last couple of games we have played well and not got the results we wanted or deserved," added the midfielder.

"As long as we keep doing the right things and keep trying to play the right way, the results will come.

"If we can pick up more wins than not between now and the end of the season, then we certainly won't be far away."
