PHIL PARKINSON believes Paul Mullin's last-gasp equaliser against lowly Forest Green Rovers will give Wrexham a much-needed lift in the push for promotion.

Wrexham were held to a 1-1 draw by second bottom Rovers who put put plenty of bodies behind the ball after taking a third minute lead at The New Lawn in Tuesday's League Two showdown.

Despite having 75 per cent of the possession, the Reds struggled to break down Rovers and created few clear cut chances.

It looked like ending in a second successive away defeat - Wrexham lost 1-0 at Gillingham on Saturday - but Mullin was brought down in the area by Jamie Robson and the striker smashed home the resulting penalty in the third minute of injury time to secure a share of the spoils.

Wrexham remain fourth in the table, three points behind leaders Mansfield Town with 12 games to go.

A number of teams are challenging for automatic promotion and Parkinson says this could be a valuable point in the quest for a top-three finish.

"Coming here I expected us to win the game but I knew it would be hard-fought and when you give away a goal like we did so early in the game, it makes it really difficult against a very resilient side," he said.

"We knew they would sit off the ball anyway and when you are 1-0 up, it gave them something to hang onto; it gives the opportunity to just drop everybody in behind the ball and drop into a low block.

"It doesn't matter where you are in the league, it is hard to break down when teams do that.

"We had loads of possession and loads of good positions but we struggled to work the goalkeeper enough.

"It wasn't the lack of trying and the structure was right, we just couldn't find that bit of quality.

"Forest Green were organised and they worked exceptionally hard to stop us, but we kept going.

"We never hid from the ball and we kept trying to play. It didn't always come off for us but there was no lack of wanting the ball or trying to make it happen.

"Eventually we got the moment and it could be an important point for us."

Wrexham had very few shots on goal that troubled Rovers goalkeeper  Vicente Reyes.

But Mullin made no mistake from the penalty spot in injury time, taking his tally for the season to 13 goals, and Parkinson believes the late equaliser could be a big moment in the quest for a second successive promotion with Wrexham back in action against mid-table Accrington Stanley at The Racecourse on Saturday.

"At the moment we are having a period where we are not producing but that will come," added the Reds' boss.

"Things haven't fallen for us and we need something like the penalty to get us off and running.

"We have looked at the reasons why and how we can make ourselves more productive but sometimes as a team, when you haven't got your rewards in a few games maybe there is that little bit of dip in confidence levels and I think you could see that.

"But we are going to use that penalty to lift us for the game against Accrington."
